The Green Mountain Sugar Maple, 'Acer saccharum "Green Mountain", is a very handsome deciduous tree with leathery leaves. This showy tree is upright and oval in shape. This tree is noted for its improved performance in dry restricted growing areas such as areas close to pavement. The Green Mountain carries all of the characteristics of the Sugar Maple with the strong limbs and the gorgeous fall color and the seeds are inconspicuous and causes no significant litter problems. The Green Mountain is used for wide tree lawns, screens, shade, and as specimen tree. It is also good street tree. The leathery leaves and durable foliage resists heat and drought. Sugar Maple is among the most shade tolerant of large deciduous trees. Princeton Sentry Ginkgo
The Princeton Sentry Ginkgo, 'Ginkgo biloba "Princeton Sentry", is a male cultivar (which are "fruitless"). This pest free, dense, fat columnar tree is a great street tree where there is limited overhead space. The fall color is brilliant yellow. Use this tree for large and small lawns, buffer strips or median plantings and as a street tree. Ginkgo are not native to North America, rather they are indigenous to China, Japan, and Korea, where they may still exist in remote mountainous parts. Today the tree is often planted in cities because of its remarkable resistance to urban smog and to insect pests. They prefer moist, sandy, well-drained soils. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, including both alkaline and acidic soils and compacted soils. Also tolerant of saline conditions, air pollution and heat. Royal White Redbud
The Royal White Redbud, 'Cercis canadensis "Royal White", demostrates the most appealing feature of the redbud species with the showy, large white flowers in early spring. The Royal White Redbud is also a more compact tree than the Eastern Redbud. These trees are effective as a single specimen, in groupings, in a shrub border, and especially nice in woodland and naturalized type situations. It has large heart shaped leaves during the summer, and long seedpods in the fall. Red Bud trees have a yellow fall color. Autumn Olive
The Autumn Olive tree, Elaeagnus umbellata, is a medium sized tree or a large shrub reaching heights of 20 plus feet. The leaves, borne alternately on the stems, are generally oval in shape, approximately 1-3 inches long, and lack teeth. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green to grayish-green in color, while the lower surface is covered with silvery white scales, a conspicuous characteristic that can be seen from a distance when the leaves move. The small light yellow flowers bloom in late April and May. This deciduous tree is a good plant for fast growing windbreaks and for wildlife food and cover. The small (less than one-quarter inch) fleshy fruits range in color from pink to red, are finely dotted with pale scales, and are produced in abundance each year. Serviceberry
The Serviceberry tree, Amelanchier canadensis, may also be known as a Juneberry, Shadblow, or Shadbush. This large shrub has erect stems that form multi-stemmed clumps The serviceberries, genus Amelanchier, are deciduous shrubs or small trees that grow in the understory of temperate forests. This deciduous tree/shrub is multistemmed and gets up to 20 ft tall with a dense, bushy spread up to 10 ft across. The bush sends up numerous suckers and can become quite a thicket. Serviceberry trees have leaves that are 2 inches long and have a very pretty white fuzzy coat when young, but becoming shiny green as they mature. Ths fall color is brilliant yellow, red or orange. The flowers are white and borne in erect clusters in early spring as the leaves are unfolding. The berrylike fruits are showy and edible. The little serviceberry shrubs are useful in naturalized plantings, especially in open woodlands, under tall oaks or pines. Their beautiful, but brief, early spring flowering beats all but the earliest shrubs, and their fall foliage is first rate. Chokeberry - Red
The Red Chockecherry, Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima', cultivar is a deciduous shrub which typically grows slowly to 6-8' tall and is perhaps most noted for its attractive glossy red berries and red fall foliage color. Clusters of white to pinkish flowers appear in spring. Flowers are followed by abundant glossy red fruits (3/8" diameter) which appear in dense clusters along the branches. Fruits ripen in late summer and persist throughout fall and well into winter. The glossy, dark green turns bright red in autumn. 'Brilliantissima' primarily differs from the species by being more compact, producing more lustrous foliage with superior red fall color and producing larger, glossier and more abundant fruit. Common name is in reference to the tart and bitter berries. which are so astringent they cause choking in those who try to eat them. The ability to withstand wet conditions makes it suitable for growing on the margins of ponds or streams. Also effective in naturalized areas where its suckering, colonial growth habit does not need to be restrained. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. The Silky Dogwood, Cornus amomum, has attractive white, greenish-white or yellow flower clusters in the spring and blue and white fruit in the fall. This plant tolerates poorly drained soils.
