Chokeberry - Autumn Magic Black Autumn Magic Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa 'Autumn Magic', has fragrant white flowers in May, followed by large, edible, dark purple-black berries, that persist throughout the season. The berries are commonly used to make juice. The glossy dark green foliage has incredible red and purple fall colors. It can grow to six feet height and width. Since it grows rapidly, you do not have to wait long for it to become an impressive large shrub within a year. This vase shaped shrub does fine in wet or dry soil, in sun or partial shade, even in poor soils. This plant makes an excellent specimen shrub, border shrub, or even use for erosion control. Cotoneaster - Spreading Spreading Cotoneaster, 'Cotoneaster divaricatus', is a beautiful rounded ornamental shrub with pink flowers in the spring. It produces bright red berries in the summer and is one of the best fruiting varieties. The glossy, dark green foliage turns red in the fall. It is marginally hardy in zone 4. This medium-sized ornamental shrub matures at about 7' tall by 8' wide and has an upright columnar growth habit in youth, but quickly becoming horizontal and spreading with age. Spreading Cotoneaster prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, but is very adaptable and urban tolerant. It has few disease and pest problems. Deutzia - Nikko Slender Nikko Slender Deutzia, Deutzia gracilis 'Nana', is an awesome groundcover type shrub that is compact and spreading. It produces an abundance of snowy white flowers in mid to late May. The flowers are beautiful, but last for only two weeks and then are gone. (Slender is in reference to the thin branches. ) The green foliage turns a deep burgundy in the fall. This plant is excellent for hedges, mass or border planting. After flowering, remove damaged or undesirable branches; and after severe winters, plant can be cut back to 6" to promote new growth. This is an easy to grow shrub that can tolerate sun, as well as some shade.
