Aside from the health benefits, which include significant amounts of fiber, potassium, folic acid and vitamin C, beets come in a variety of colors, shapes and textures. Enjoy the entire plant, from tender greens to tasty root. The varieties included in the Gourmet Blend are Chioggia, Golden, and Bulls Blood. They are high in nutrients and low in calories. The Beet Gourmet Blend is a blood red globe-shaped vegetable. The Beet is cold hardy, and seeds can germinate and grow in soil temperatures as low as 40 degrees. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost. Growing during hot temperature periods should be avoided. In mild climates, seed can be sown September for February harvest. The 1 foot tall plants are excellent in pots and display large, lavender flowers over an extended period. They are often used as a vegetarian substitute for expensive meats. Plant in the spring, 3 to 4 weeks after the last average frost date. Ground temperature needs to very warm for seed to germinate. If nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees, the fruit will not set. Eggplant prefers rich, deep, loose soils with large amounts of organic material. Husky Gold has beautiful gold color tomatoes, high yields, compact plant, and disease resistance which make this plant a great choice. The golden deep oblate fruits weigh in at about 5 to 7 oz. Tomatoes are generally started inside. They may also be seeded outside after the last average frost date. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes need at least 1 inch of water a week. Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering.
