Sensitive Fern The Sensitive Fern, Onoclea sensibilis, is a large, somewhat coarse deciduous fern which occurs in wet woods and thickets and in moist soils along streams and springs. Sensitive Ferns can grow up to 4' tall. It features long-stalked, deeply pinnatifid, bright green, vegetative (sterile) fronds (2-4' long) with leathery, triangular leaflets (pinnae) which have distinctively netted veins. Some shorter, erect, woody-like fertile fronds (to 12" tall), typically brown up in late summer and persist throughout the remaining season and winter. It is commonly called sensitive fern because the green vegetative fronds are sensitive to and suffer almost immediate damage from the first fall frost. This deciduous perennial fern is also sensitive to drought. It performs best in wet woodland gardens and moist locations along streams and ponds. Also appropriate for shaded areas of a native plant garden or naturalized planting. The foliage may depreciate as summer progresses in hot climates, particularly if soils are not kept moist. It is best not to remove dead fronds until spring, because they provide protection for the crowns over the winter. - Home Family - Garden - Ferns - 453144421

Chinese Chestnut The Chinese Chestnut, Castanea mollissima, can be used as a nut tree and a shade tree, or planted in rows as a windbreak. The nuts are sweet-flavored and produce edible nuts in winter. This deciduous tree has moderate water requirements and it has a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Landscapers plant the Chinese Chestnut as an ornamental. Chinese Chestnut trees do well in hot dry climates and are blight resistant. The foliage is dark green in summer. This hardy tree will bear fruit in 7-8 years when placed on a good site. The dark green leaves are 5?-8? in length with a simple shape that turn yellow and gold in the fall. It produces edible chestnuts after establishment. The outer shell of the nut is prickly and must be removed. This variety of chestnut is resistant to chestnut blight (but not immune). This tree tolerates heat, drought, transplanting, and dry and acidic soils. - Home Family - Garden - Trees - 453144427

London Sycamore The London Sycamore tree, Platanus Acerifolia, or "Bloodgood Sycamore" is a large tree. The tree will revery a height of 85 feet and a spread of 70 feet. Pyramidal in youth, it develops a spreading rounded crown with age supported by a few, very large diameter branches. The bark is patchy and very attractive and may be the plants best ornamental attribute. These patches range from creamy-white to olive-green. Large sections of bark may be shed from the tree as it grows older. This deciduous tree is a fast growing shade tree. Unlike many other fast-growing shade trees, it?s not extremely weak wooded and thus isn?t prone to a lot of limb breakage in ice and snowstorms. London Sycamore trees are easily transplanted and will do well in most soils, but prefers a deep, rich soil. It?s also tolerant of city conditions, air pollution, compacted soils, and drought. It?s a very durable tree. As a big tree, it also provides lots of wonderful shade in parks. - Home Family - Garden - Trees - 453144564

'Ann' develops a somewhat open habit with deep purple-red, 7-9 inch petaled flowers. Ann Magnolia trees are vigorous and hardy. Best grown in normal garden soil in full sun. This magnolia was bred for late bloom (mid-April to early May) to avoid the hazards of late frost. It forms a shrubby mound and has leathery green foliage. It has lightly scented reddish-purple flowers that emerge from beautiful, tapered buds. There is often sporadic repeat bloom in mid-summer. The flowers are large and red-purple on both sides. - Home Family - Garden - Trees - 453144565
