Gomphrena - Strawberry Fields The Gomphrena Strawberry Fields, 'Gomphrena haageana', will delight you with it's vivid, striking red flower clusters. It is a native of Texas and Mexico so they are recommended for areas with hot and humid summers. Strawberry fields has 3/4 inch wide, round, papery. lover-like flower heads. They bloom from summer into early fall. The clover-like vivid red flowers will brighten your garden. Strawberry Fields prefers full sun and will grow in any well drained garden soil but prefers light, sandy soil. They do not require any special care and are fairly drought tolerant. Grass - Blue Eyed The Grass Blue Eyed, 'Sisyrinchium bellum', is a delightful little Iris relative from the coast of California. The tufts of narrow, upright bluish-green leaves lend a casual air to the flower bed or rock garden. They resemble an ornamental grass until constellations of bluish-purple star shaped flowers appear for several weeks in the spring. The Blue Eyed Grass blooms in early spring through early summer. They may rebloom in the fall. Blue Eyed Grass prefers well drained sandy soils. Plant them in full sun to light shade. They are somewhat drought tolerant but they like evenly moist soil. Plant in the early spring, 2 to 4 weeks before the last average frost date or late summer/early fall. Ladys Mantle - Thriller The Lady's Mantle Thriller, 'Alchemilla mollis 'Thriller', has billowing heads of soft yellow-green star-shaped flowers that are highly prized as a long lasting cut flower. The Lady's Mantle has a place in every garden. After a rain, attractive foliage holds droplets of water which glisten in the sun. The flowers are star-shaped, 1/8 inch across, and held high above the foliage. They bloom in mid summer for 6 to 10 weeks. . The Thriller prefers full sun except in areas that have very hot summer days. In those areas, light shade is recommended. Place the Lady's Mantle in moist, well drained soils with plenty of organic material. Plant in the spring, 2 weeks before average last frost date. or late summer /early fall 2 months before first frost. Larkspur - Rose The Larkspur Rose, 'Consolida ambigua', has tall spires of rose colored flowers. It is considered one of the best for cut and dried flower arrangements. The 1/4 to 1/2 inch rose colored flowers are densely packed on tall stems. The Rose Larkspur blooms in mid spring to early summer. The Larkspur prefer a cool location in full sun. They like moist, rich, well drained soil that is slightly alkaline. Plant in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Lupine - Russell Mix The Lupine Russell Blend, 'Lupinus 'Russell Hybrids', has tall flower spikes with a large range of colors that makes Lupine when planted in groups a dramatic sight. The scents of the blossoms is like honey and it is a North America native flower. It is grown as an annual in southern states. The flowers are multiple 1/2 inch wide blossoms on spikes. They come in colors of white, yellow, pink, orange, red, salmon, lavender, blue, purple, and bicolors. Lupines bloom for 2 to 4 weeks in late spring. The Russel Blend prefers full sun and relatively cool conditions so do not plant in a hot spot. They prefer well drained and slightly acidic soil. Plant in the spring after average last frost date or in late summer in warmer climates.
