Horsechestnut Buckeye The Horsechestnut Buckeye tree, Aesculus hippocastanum, is a beautiful, round-headed tree perfectly suited for use in smaller yards. This flowering tree has long, dense clusters of single, bright-red flowers and are very attractive and favored by hummingbirds. Horsechestnut Buckeye trees are deciduous. This tree is widely planted in parks, avenues and in large gardens. This tree bloomes in early summer with individual flowers that have crumpled white petals which ages to dull red. Fruits have a leathery case covered with short prickles and in autumn release large seeds. The dark green foliage turns yellow-brown in fall. The nuts produced by this species are inedible. Pin Oak The Pin Oak tree, Quercus palustris, is probably the most widely used native oak for landscaping. One of the faster growing oaks; it can grow 12 to 15? over a 5 to 7 year period. Pin Oak trees have moderate water requirements and have a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. This deciduous tree prospers in a range of soil types including wet soils. It has pyramidal, dense, pendulous lower branches when mature. It loses it lower limbs with age. Young trees and lower branches of older trees hold leaves throughout winter. Sourwood The Sourwood tree, Oxydendrum arboreum, is one of the most prized native trees, especially noted for its summer flowering and gorgeous fall colors. The Sourwood makes a nice small specimen tree for small spaces and looks great at the woodland edge. It is also known as the Sorrel Tree and Lily-of-the-Valley Tree. Sourwood honey is prized by gourmets. The leaves are deciduous, up to 8" in length, sour-tasting, and turn scarlet in the fall. The fruit is a small gray capsule appearing in spike-like clusters. The bark is dark and blocky (alligator hide). Displays white Lily-of-the-Valley like flowers in July. Plant in full sun to partial shade in acid, organic, moist, well-drained soil. White Walnut The White Walnut tree, Juglans cinerea, also known as White walnut and Butternut tree is a small to medium-sized tree. This tree has a short trunk which is divided into a few ascending limbs with large spreading, sparsely forked branches. The smaller branches tend to bend downwards and then turn up at the ends. The crown is open, broad, irregular in outline and rounded at the top. The root system is composed of a number of wide-spreading laterals that grow to a considerable depth. Usually a taproot develops in deep soils. White Walnut trees grows fast, especially as a seedling, but usually does not live longer than 75 years. Nuts resemble Black Walnut, but smaller, with an oily, spicy flavor. Tree is best known for the rich quality of its wood. Dawn Redwood The Dawn Redwood tree, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, is a deciduous conifer, with soft needle-like leaves that look like evergreens, but are bright green in the spring and brilliant orange/red in the fall. The needles are shed in the cold season of winter. Dawn Redwood trees are a very ornamental and interesting large tree, one of the few deciduous conifers in the world. It is feathery pyramidal in form with a straight, fluted trunk. It grows very fast to 40? and can grow to 70?. The bark is red- brown, fissured and exfoliating in long strips. It is a beautiful and stately tree, well suited for large areas. It makes a very effective, fast growing screen, perfect as a long driveway alley. This tree does best in full sun and when provided with adequate moisture. The Dawn Redwood has been called "a living fossil" because it was first discovered in Japan in 1941 and then found growing in the wild in China. The species is over 50 million years old. Tomato - Cherokee Purple The Tomato Pole Cherokee Purple, 'Lycopersicon lycopersicum', is an old Heirloom variety from Tennessee that is extremely productive and also has a very rich tomato flavor. The Cherokee Purple produces large numbers of 10 to 12 ounce tomatoes with a strong tomato flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. The flesh is a unique red brick color with a rose/purple skin color. Tomatoes are generally started inside. They may also be seeded outside after the last average frost date. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter.
