Concolor Fir The Concolor Fir tree, Abies concolor, is also known as white fir, concolor fir, silver fir, Rocky Mountain white fir, Colorado Fir, Lows Fir, Pacific white fir. Concolor Fir trees are large, densely-growing, narrow trees with a dome-shaped crown growing to 50 feet or more. This evergreen conifer tree is native to the mountainous regions of the western United States. This rapid growing fir tree is the most drought-resistant of all native firs. Although it can exist on poor, dry sites, the white fir grows most vigorously in moist, well-drained, acid soils in protected locations. It is a rapid grower after it becomes established. Dwarf Mondo Grass Dwarf Mondo Grass, Ophiopogon japonicus, is an ornamental grass which grows to 4" in height and is closely related to the liriope. It is also known as Dwarf Lilyturf, Mondo Grass Dwarf and Monkey Grass. Tiny, pale lavender flowers on short stalks bloom in summer are often hidden by the leaves. This perennial evergreen grows in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Mondo Grasses are symmetrical with a fine texture and has a dense crown. It spreads by underground stems or tubers. This plant is widely used in rock gardens, seashore plantings, borders and groundcovers. Ebony Spleenwort Fern Ebony Spleenwort Fern, Asplenium platyneuron, is an evergreen fern which typically grows to 15" tall and occurs on rocky wooded ledges, rocky slopes and mossy banks. The fronds are arching, pinnate, somewhat glossy and are dark green and sterile. The central stipe (stem) is dark purplish brown. Ebony Spleewort Ferns are also know as Spleenwort Ferns. The common name of spleenwort refers to purported medicinal value once attributed to the plant. Plant in dry, rocky, shady areas of rock gardens (will grow in rocky crevices), native plant gardens or woodland areas. The ideal planting area would be in a shaded area rich in leaf mulch. Fraser Fir The Fraser Fir, Abies Fraseri, is a classy, tall, fir tree that has short dark-green needles with silver undersides. It is among the most classy of conifers. A great ornamental and Christmas tree because of its density and compactness. Fraser Firs will grow in most locations but must have good drainage. Fraser Fir is a medium-sized tree, 40 to 70 feet high and one to more than two feet in diameter. This dense evergreen tree has wood that is light, soft, not strong and coarse-grained. Hayscented Fern The Hayscented Fern, Dennstaedtia punctilobula, is very common. It can be identified by its lacy, light-green fronds that feel very slightly sticky to the touch. It often grows in large colonies and appears to be forming a carpet. They are vigorous growers and tolerate most conditions. Hay Scented Ferns are also known as Cup ferns. When the leaves are bruised they smell like fresh mown hay, hence the name. It is an aggressive spreader and is a very popular garden fern. Iris - Sky Wings The Iris 'Sky Wings', 'Iris hollandica', a fall planted bulb, is a bright and airy Dutch iris that resembles a bird in flight. Its unmatched presence is an elegant addition to any garden. The exquisite sky blue flowers rest atop sturdy stems. The sword-like leaves add oft-lacking vertical lines to the garden. Despite their name, these irises never grew wild in the Netherlands. Instead, they are the products of hybridization by a Dutch plant breeding firm. Coreopsis - Early Sunrise The Coreopsis ?Early Sunrise?, Coreopsis grandiflora, is a definite superstar among yellow flowers. This All-American Selections Gold Metal Award Winner has yellow flowers flush to orange-yellow near the center and bloom June through October. In the Tickseed family, the dark green thread leaf foliage makes a great contrast with the flower color. ?Early Sunrise? has a plant height of 24? and a spread of 10-12? and is a frog and hedgehog attractor. ?Early Sunrise? should be planted in full sun. Early Sunrises are drought-tolerant and tough but do need well-drained soil. It should be cut backing early and late summer to extend the bloom period.
