White Flowering Dogwood The White Flowering Dogwood, Cornus Florida, is the ?aristocrat? of flowering trees because it is breathtakingly beautiful with its white blossoms. The White Flowering Dogwood has an excellent show of white blossoms in spring, and bright red berries in fall and winter. It is planted as a specimen, near a patio, or in groupings. It is a low branching tree that spreads horizontally and has a semi-rounded top. Does best in sun to part shade. This deciduous tree does best in well-drained acid soil with sufficient organic matter. Mulch to maintain a cool, moist soil. Needs summer water. The White Flowering Dogwood is one of the showiest native trees. The flowers unfold from the round, conspicuous, gray winter flower buds before the leaves come out. The white or pink flower bracts are showy and often thought to be the petals of the flower. They open in May. The fruit is a bright scarlet, relished by birds, squirrels, and other animals, which often eat the fruit before it colors and matures, usually between September and November. The wood is hard, heavy, strong, very close-grained, and brown to red in color. - Category: Home/Family - Garden - Trees Item: 453527595

Black Oak The Black Oak tree, Quercus velutina, is very similar in appearance to the Red Oak. One of the main differences include its ability to thrive on poor and varied soils. It is sometimes called yellow oak, quercitron, yellowbark oak, or smoothbark oak. Black Oak trees occur naturally on poor sandy or clay hillsides. This deciduous tree has deeply furrowed bark and on mature trees is nearly black. The thick, nearly black bark is marked with deep furrows and irregularly broken ridges. The characteristic inner bark is bright yellow to orange, hence the alternate common name of Yellow Oak. This moderately growing oak tree grows on dry uplands, slopes and ridges. The wood, while hard and strong is not tough. It generally is inferior to that of the Red Oak. Still, it is used in much the same ways. Historically, the inner bark was important for its tannin and as a source of yellow dye. The green leaves have a notably velvety underside. - Category: Home/Family - Garden - Trees Item: 453527599

Gladiolus - Cheops The Gladiolus Cheops, 'Gladioli', a spring planted corm, exhibits magnificent white flowers with a pink blush on tall stalks. Gladiolus are also commonly called Sword Lily or Corn Flag. Plant in groups of six or more in the garden, or grow lots of them for cuttings in a bed. To extend the time of flower availability of your Glads, plant in two week intervals from early spring through June. They make striking accents in a mixed border. Glads are easy to grow and like to be in full sun and in well drained soil. Increase water and fertility when flowers begin to develop, then plant 4" deep in clay soils, 6" deep in others; the deeper the planting the less need for staking. In frost prone areas, dig them when the leaves turn yellow, dip them in a fungicide, and store in a dry frost free location over winter. - Home/Family - Garden - Spring Bulbs - 456298522
