Dwarf Mondo Grass
Dwarf Mondo Grass, Ophiopogon japonicus, is an ornamental grass which grows to 4" in height and is closely related to the liriope. It is also known as Dwarf Lilyturf, Mondo Grass Dwarf and Monkey Grass. Tiny, pale lavender flowers on short stalks bloom in summer are often hidden by the leaves. This perennial evergreen grows in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Mondo Grasses are symmetrical with a fine texture and has a dense crown. It spreads by underground stems or tubers. This plant is widely used in rock gardens, seashore plantings, borders and groundcovers. Ebony Spleenwort Fern
Ebony Spleenwort Fern, Asplenium platyneuron, is an evergreen fern which typically grows to 15" tall and occurs on rocky wooded ledges, rocky slopes and mossy banks. The fronds are arching, pinnate, somewhat glossy and are dark green and sterile. The central stipe (stem) is dark purplish brown. Ebony Spleewort Ferns are also know as Spleenwort Ferns. The common name of spleenwort refers to purported medicinal value once attributed to the plant. Plant in dry, rocky, shady areas of rock gardens (will grow in rocky crevices), native plant gardens or woodland areas. The ideal planting area would be in a shaded area rich in leaf mulch. Hayscented Fern
The Hayscented Fern, Dennstaedtia punctilobula, is very common. It can be identified by its lacy, light-green fronds that feel very slightly sticky to the touch. It often grows in large colonies and appears to be forming a carpet. They are vigorous growers and tolerate most conditions. Hay Scented Ferns are also known as Cup ferns. When the leaves are bruised they smell like fresh mown hay, hence the name. It is an aggressive spreader and is a very popular garden fern. The Bean Pole Snap Kentucky Blue, 'Phaseolus vulgaris', is a 1991 All America Winner. The parents are Kentucky Wonder/Blue Lake and they provide a sweetened taste. The Kentucky Blue, like most pole beans, produces all season and is earlier than most pole beans. This snap bean is very resistant to rusts and mosaic virus. In addition, the pole snap beans will use less garden space by growing vertically on a pole, trellis, or teepee made of poles. Snap beans used to be called string beans, but most varieties today are stringless. The Pole Bean Kentucky Blue is an annual and is very frost sensitive. Pole types have 3 to 7 foot long vines. The Kentucky Blue has 6 to 8 inch, tender, dark green, round, straight pods. Plant after the last average frost date. Bean Pole - Snap - Yard Long
The Bean Pole Liana Yard Long, 'Phaseolus sesquipedalis', has a unique bean/pea flavor of "dow ghok" that is a favorite of the orient. "Good to eat as they are strange to behold". Liana Yard Long is not really a true bean. Asparagus or Yard Long are grown just like a pole bean, which remind some of asparagus. This plant is easy to grow and almost indestructible. When young, leaves and stems can also be steamed. Yard Long beans are of the sub-tropical origin, but Liana was specifically developed for gardens in North America. The beans are best harvested 12 to 18 inches long, even though they will get 24 inches long. Liana is a pole type plant with vines 6 to 8 feet long.
