Black Locust The Black Locust tree, Robinia pseudoacacia, is sometimes called the yellow locust. Black Locust trees grow naturally on a wide range of sites but does best on rich moist limestone soils. It has escaped cultivation and become naturalized throughout eastern North America and parts of the West. Black locust is not a commercial timber species but is useful for many other purposes. This deciduous tree is a nitrogen fixer and has rapid juvenile growth. It is widely planted as an ornamental, for shelterbelts, and for land reclamation. This fast growing Locust tree is suitable for fuel wood and pulp and provides cover for wildlife, browse for deer, and cavities for birds. It is a very thorny tree which can attain a height of 70-80 feet and can have a diameter of 2-3 feet. The flowers are white, fragrant, and hang in clusters. Osage Orange The Osage Orange tree, Maclura pomifera, has bright green summer leaves with yellow fall color. The Osage Orange bears an inedible fruit resembling a woody orange. It is sometmes called the Hedge Apple tree and Mock Orange and Bodark tree. Native to the midwestern and southeastern United States, this species is also known as the hedge apple because it was planted in thicket-like hedge rows before the advent of barbed wire fences. The fruit is neither an orange nor an apple, although it approaches the size of those fruits. In fact, the bumpy surface of the fruit is due to the numerous, tightly-packed ovaries of the female flowers. The wood of osage orange was highly prized by the Osage Indians of Arkansas and Missouri for bows. In fact, osage orange trees are stronger than oak (Quercus) and as tough as hickory (Carya), and is considered by archers to be one of the finest native North American woods for bows. In Arkansas, in the early 19th century, a good osage bow was worth a horse and a blanket. Lilac - Miss Kim The Lilac' Miss Kim', Syringa patula 'Miss Kim', is a very popular shrub. It is thought by many to be the number one Lilac in the Midwestern United States. The Miss Kim Lilac is compact and upright-rounded in form. It has an abundance of fragrant blossoms in spring that are dark lavender-pink in bud and fade to a very soft lavender-pink when fully opened. The blossoms are even more plentiful when it is planted in full sun. Miss Kim has the best fall color of any Lilac, a reddish purple. Compact and upright-rounded in form, it slowly grows to five feet tall and wide. Silver Maple The Silver Maple tree, Acer Saccharinum, is a medium to large fast growing tree. The species is ideal for wet bottomland sites and can easily recover from extended periods of flooding. It is one of the best trees for poor soil and it transplants very easily. The wood of this maple tree is soft and can be damaged by severe winds or ice storms. Along with its fast growth, it may live 130 years or more. The Silver Maple is often used in residential areas for shade because of its thick foliage and fast growth. Its leaves are deeply cut and silvery white underneath. They appear as light green and turn to yellow in the fall. This deciduous maple tree provides very dense shade.
