Ebony Spleenwort Fern Ebony Spleenwort Fern, Asplenium platyneuron, is an evergreen fern which typically grows to 15" tall and occurs on rocky wooded ledges, rocky slopes and mossy banks. The fronds are arching, pinnate, somewhat glossy and are dark green and sterile. The central stipe (stem) is dark purplish brown. Ebony Spleewort Ferns are also know as Spleenwort Ferns. The common name of spleenwort refers to purported medicinal value once attributed to the plant. Plant in dry, rocky, shady areas of rock gardens (will grow in rocky crevices), native plant gardens or woodland areas. The ideal planting area would be in a shaded area rich in leaf mulch. A great ornamental and Christmas tree because of its density and compactness. Fraser Firs will grow in most locations but must have good drainage. Fraser Fir is a medium-sized tree, 40 to 70 feet high and one to more than two feet in diameter. This dense evergreen tree has wood that is light, soft, not strong and coarse-grained. Hayscented Fern The Hayscented Fern, Dennstaedtia punctilobula, is very common. It can be identified by its lacy, light-green fronds that feel very slightly sticky to the touch. It often grows in large colonies and appears to be forming a carpet. They are vigorous growers and tolerate most conditions. Hay Scented Ferns are also known as Cup ferns. When the leaves are bruised they smell like fresh mown hay, hence the name. It is an aggressive spreader and is a very popular garden fern. Indigo Bush-False Indigo The False Indigo Bush, Amorpha fruticosa, is a somewhat leggy shrub, whose height can range from 6 to 20 feet tall,and 5 to 15 feet wide. Fragrant foliage has the compound pinnate leaves typical of the Pea family, often most bushy on the upper third of the shrub. Flowers are 1/3-inch wide, purple-blue with orange anthers, on 3- to 6-inch upright spikes. Fruit is a warty, kidney shaped pod, persisting into winter. This deciduous shrub does well in full sun and poor, sandy soil. Needs pruning in late winter or early spring to keep shaped. Useful as a large shrub or small tree in areas where there is plenty of water available. Native from Connecticut to Minnesota, south to Louisiana and Florida.
