Coleus - Saturn
The Coleus Saturn, 'Coleus hybrid', has burgundy red foliage with bright lime lines down the center and scalloped edges. These new, bigger, sun loving varieties have revolutionized contanier gardening. The brilliant colors explode in sunny locations. Coleus plants are durable and easy to grow. The coleus plants are a tender perennials. Frost will cause them to die immediately. Coleus plants are so colorful that many people keep them and use them as a house plant. These plants will do best in temperatures above 55 degrees. Flower buds should be pinched off as soon as they develop. If a coleus plant is allowed to seed, it has completed its life cycle and will die. Coleus must have good soil drainage. Poorly drained soils and excessive watering will damage coleus. Plants suffering from "wet feet" will be stunted, leaves will turn a muddy brown, and leaf margins will be scorched. Slippery Elm
The Slippery Elm tree, 'Ulmus rubra', also know as Red Elm, is medium-sized tree that prefers moist soils. The leaves are large and very rough to the touch. It is distinguishable from other elms by its red, hairy buds and its rough, hairy twigs. The buds are covered with rusty red hairs and the wood is red to dark brown, hence the Latin name rubra, meaning red. The bark is deeply furrowed and brownish red. The inner bark is stringy, and slimy or slippery, hence the common name Slippery elm. It is less susceptible to Dutch elm disease than many elms, and has a different branching pattern. Astilbe - Country and Western
The Astilbe ?Country and Western?, Astilbe arendsii 'Country and Western' (PP14969), is a colorful feathery flower with bright puffy pink blooms and shiny deep green foliage. Country and Western is part of the new Music series of Astilbes which are known for their large puffy blooms. The flowers contrast wonderfully with the dark green glossy foliage. Astilbe ?Country and Western? blooms in early summer. Astilbes are grown most successfully in rich soil and under partial sun. The biggest key to successful growth of your Astilbes is water. . . . they require a lot of water. The soil must remain moist. If the soil drys out the plant will falter quickly, especially in the sun. Wait to cut the foilage back until spring as that will protect the plant during the winter. Fertilize Astilbes in late spring before the flowers emerge.
