Kentucky Coffee Tree The Kentucky Coffee Tree, Gymnocladus Dioicus, may also be known as American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogony, nicker treet, or stump tree. Kentucky Coffee trees are large round-barked trees belonging to the legume family and reveryes heights of 60 to 100 feet. Its short trunk, 1 to 2 feet in diameter, divides into several large branches. The leaves are ovalish and are 2-4 inches long. An unofficial state tree of Kentucky, the Kentucky Coffee Tree is closely related to the honeylocust. This deciduous tree is ideal as a shade tree on larger, ungroomed properties. It got its name because early North American colonists used the large seeds to make coffee. When eaten raw, the seeds are poisonous. The bark is deeply furrowed and dark brown in colour. Grass - Blue Oat The Grass 'Blue Oat Grass', Helictotrichon sempervirens , is more enduring than blue fescues. Blue Oat grass is the best choice for accents. The clear blue summer foliage echoes with dwarf blue spruce and blue junipers. For a dramatic effect, try Helictotrichon with deep maroon leaved canna lilies. The blades are upright and divergent. Blue Oat grasses are mostly grown for its metallic blue foliage. The handsome flowers resembling one-sided oat panicles appear in June and grow 1-2 feet above the leaves. Barren Strawberry The Barren Strawberry', also known as Waldsteinia ternata, is a wonderful ground cover that grows in full sun to part shade and prefers normal to sandy soils. It has dark, dense, evergreen, strawberry-like foliage that forms into nice mounds with a height of 4-6". 'Barren Strawberry' bears yellow flowers in spring and then shows warm, yellow colors in Autumn. Creeping Wirevine The Creeping Wire vine, Muehlenbeckia, is a vine with strongly rooting and densely intertwining stems. The roughly circular leaves are 1cm across and the white, strongly scented flowers are borne in small clusters, followed by shining black fruits. vine, Muehlenbeckia, is different, odd, down right strange. This New Zealand gem has dark, wiry stems that contort, curl, and bend like nothing you've seen. Small, attractive emerald green leaflets. Coreopsis - Cr me Brulee The Coreopsis ?Cr?me Brulee? is new to the market and has bright deep yellow flowers that blooms from June through October. In the Tickseed family, ?Cr?me Brulee? has larger flowers than most Coreopsis in its family. ?Cr?me Brulees? have a plant height of 24? and a spread of 18?. The bright green thread leaf foliage makes a great contrast with the flower color. ?Cr?me Brulee? should be planted in full sun. It is drought-tolerant and tough but does need well-drained soil. The foliage is mildew-resistant and should be cut backing early and late summer to extend the bloom period. Accolade Elm The Accolade? Elm, Ulmus 'Morton', has an excellent resistance to Dutch Elm disease. This tree has an upright, spreading shape. It is a fast growing tree that has dark green foliage in summer. It creates an excellent shade tree for larger yards or street plantings. Elms prefer full sun and adapt easily to extremes in pH, moisture, wind and heat. They do prefer well-drained, sandy, loamy or clay soils. The aggressive roots can probably break sidewalks and raise pavement if trees are improperly located. The Accolade Elm has an excellent disease and pest resistance, drought tolerance, and good yellow fall color.
