Lobelia - Crystal Palace
The Lobelia Crystal Palace, 'Lobelia erinus', is a low growing ground cover with intensely rich, deep blue flowers massed over the top of the plant. The foliage is not often seen because of all the flowers which bloom from spring to fall. In mild winter areas, Lobellia will grow and bloom during the winter. The blue flowers are 1/4 inch tubular blooms. The Crystal Palace catches your eye with dazzling, vibrant color whether in a pot, a rock garden, a border, or a basket. Crystal Palace prefers full sun. In extremely hot summer locations, some afternoon shade is recommended. Place the Lobelia in fertile, rich, well drained soils and keep the soil moist. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date or late summer in warmer climates. The Nicotiana Indian Peace Pipe, 'Nocotiana sylvestris', is a bold, dramatic plant that is very fragrant. At night, the very fragrant 3 inch long flowers will waft their perfume into your open windows. For the lover of white flower plantings, envision Indian Peace Pipe growing with a multitude of other white flowers including Alysum, Candytuft and Baby's Breath. The Indian Peace Pipe produces numerous 3 inch long trumpet-shaped white, pendant flowers. This plant flowers from mid to late summer until first fall frost. The Nicotiana prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade. They also prefer a fertile, slightly acid soil. Nierembergia - Purple Robe
The Nierembergia Purple Robe (Dwarf Cupflower), 'Nierembergia hippomanica', is a wonderful plant either as a perennial in Zones 7 or warmer, or as an annual everywhere else. The Purple Robe is smothered with hundreds of dainty saucer-shaped flowers during the summer. The flowers are a very deep blue/violet and are saucer shaped with a 1 inch radius. This Nierembergia blooms late spring to early fall. The Purple Robe is very easy to grow. Place the Purple Robe in sun to light shade. In very hot summer locations, light shade is preferred. These plants like light, moist, well drained soils. Shear into mound shape for continuous bloom. Plant in early spring, 2 to 4 weeks before last average frost date. or in early fall if grown as a perennial. Portulaca - Double Mix
The Portulaca Double Mix, 'Portulaca grandiflora', is a great plant for hot, dry summers or warm locations such as parking strips, dry banks, rock gardens, ground cover, and hanging baskets. The Double Mix displays beautiful 1 to 2 inch rose-like, double, brilliantly colored flowers in red, cerise, rose pink, orange, yellow, white, and pastel shades. It blooms from early summer into the fall. The flowers open in the sun and close at night or in the shade. Portulacas prefer a hot location in full sun. The soil should be well drained. They are drought tolerant, so do not over water. These easy to grow plants should be planted after the last average frost date, when the temperatures are warmer. Sunflower - Teddy Bear
The Teddy Bear sunflower, 'Helianthus annuus', is a dwarf sunflower plant with many 4 to 6 inch double yellow-gold flowers that look like huge mums. Teddy Bear sunflowers are annual that blooms mid-summer to fall. It will grow in almost any soil and is drought tolerant but, for larger and profuse flowering, good moisture is required. The Teddy Bear sunflower should be planted after the average last frost date.
