Nemesia - Carnival Mix The Nemesia Carnival Mix, 'Nemesia strumosa Nana Compacta', has very brilliantly colored flowers on a dwarf plant. Cute as a button, this wonderful cool season annual has snapdragon-like flowers. They come in shades of cream, yellow, blue, orange, crimson, pink, and bicolors. The 3/4 inch funnel-shaped flowers with a pouch at the base are borne on 3 to 4 inch spikes. The Carnival Mix blooms in the spring through early summer. The Nemesia prefers full sun or afternoon shade in hot summer climates. They do best in rich garden soil that is high in organic matter. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. In warm climates, plant in spring or fall. In short season climates plant after last average frost date. Pansy - Antique Shades The Pansy Antique Shades, 'Viola wittrockiania', is a very beautiful pansy mix. The soft lovely colors make this pansy an easy choice for pansy lovers. Technically a perennial, grown as an annual, pansies will overwinter in climates as cold as zone 4. Antique Shades is an Early Giant type and has 3 inch flowers of mixed colors including baby yellow, pevery, burgundy, rust, and cream. Pansies bloom best during cool weather, this means spring in cool climates and fall and winter in warm climates. Antique Shades prefers full sun but they tolerate some light shade. Poppy - California White Linen The California Poppy White Linen, 'Eschscholzia californica', planted in mass is a striking vision. This Poppy looks great planted alone or blended in with either Orange or Mikado poppies. The California White Linen Poppy is a perennial that is usually grown as an annual. In zones 7-11, though, the foliage often overwinters. The solid white, silky, saucer shaped 2 to 3 inch flowers have 4 delicate paper-like petals. This Poppy blooms best in the cool weather of spring. The White Linen Poppy needs full sun. On cloudy days or in the shade, the blooms will close. Ash Leaf Spirea - Sem Sem Ash Leaf Spirea, Sorbaria sorbifolia 'Sem' (16,336), is a pinkish-red, fern-like spring foliage that unfurls along deep pink stems . In July and August the neat, round shrub covers itself with creamy white blossoms. This dwarf variety makes a wonderful low hedge, or a great accent. Sem is an improvement from older Sorbaria varieties. Viburnum - Northern Burgundy Arrowwood Northern Burgundy? Arrowwood Viburnum, viburnum dentatum 'Morton', is an upright, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub that displays creamy white flowers. The branching is upright and spreading, eventually arching over at the tips. It blooms in late June above the glossy, dark green foliage. Northern Burgundy has a spectacular fall color display with clusters of blue-black fruit hanging among the burgundy foliage. Its fruits attract birds. The fall color development is highly dependent on the individual plant; some plants turn yellow; some plants turn red to reddish purple. Northern Burgundy is very easy to grow and requires full sun to partial shade with soil that is from dry to fairly wet. It is easily transplanted and can grow 10-12 feet in height and width. This viburnum is useful for its extreme durability in borders, screens, parking lots, and mass plantings. Viburnum - Redwing American Cranberrybush Redwing? American Cranberrybush, 'Viburnum trilobum 'J. N. Select', has something for every season. The spring foliage has a reddish tint. White flowers appear in mid May, followed by persistent bright red fruit. The fall color is a stunning brilliant red with a very impressive berry display. Redwing has a densely branched upright form, good growth rate and attractive, red-tinted new foliage. It requires full sun to partial shade; moist, well-drained soil is best, but is tolerant of wet soils; also tolerant of alkaline soils. This upright, round shaped shrub grows 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 wide. Redwing offers something of interest all year and its dense foliage makes a nice hedge. Viburnum - Shasta Doublefile Shasta Doublefile Viburnum, viburnum plicatum 'Shasta', is a shrub with horizontal growth, twice as wide as high. Large, exquisite, white flowers in May are followed by scarlet-red fruit in late July and August. The green foliage turns plum color in fall. It has a broad to rounded shape at maturity and grows 6 feet tall and 10-12 feet wide. It grows well in many exposures and soils, but does best in full sun with moderate moisture and well-drained soils. It does require some light shade in more southern areas. Shasta Doublefile can be planted as a specimen plant, massed group, or a shrub border. It creates a good horizontal element in the landscape, particularly effective planted so as to be viewed from above. Viburnum are one of the most outstanding group of shrubs for use in the landscape planting because they are hardy and resistant to serious pests.
