Scabiosa - Pink Mist
The Scabiosa 'Pink Mist', Scabiosa columbaria, also know as the Pincushion Flower, has wonderful 2" pink flowers that bloom from June to October. 'Pink Mist' is a reminiscent of a pincushion full of pins. With its gray-green foliage, it has a plant height of 12? and a spread of 12-18", not to mention being disease resistant. It is best to plant Scabiosa in full sun, with well-drained soil and should be watered regularly throughout the warmer months to increase its overall performance. Deadheading after the first bloom will encourage repeat bloom time. 'Pink Mist' is great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds and does excellent in rock gardens. It will do excellent for front-of-the-border areas, with Coreopsis 'Moonbeam', Dianthus 'Bath's Pink', in mass plantings or as cut flowers. Yarrow - Moonshine
The Yarrow ?Moonshine?, Achillea 'Moonshine'?, is an upright canary-yellow flower that blooms from June through September. With evergreen foliage in mild winter regions, this non-spreading Achillea is a definite winner. ?Moonshine? Yarrow is unlike the common Yarrow, being shorter in height and less invasive. The flower heads are 4? wide, with a spread of 18-24? and a height of 24?. ?Moonshine? Yarrow is a great addition to a sunny perennial border, planted in pots or combined with ornamental grasses. ?Moonshine? Yarrow can tolerate poor soil conditions, but does best in lean, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil. (Avoid heavy clays and moist, rich, fertile soils. ) Yarrow should be planted in full sun and is tolerant to hot humid summers. Remove faded flowers to encourage more growth and divide every 3-4 years. Dwarf Joe Pye Weed - Little Joe
The Little Joe-Pye Weed, 'Eupatorium purpureum', is a wonderful lavender purple bloomer that stands 4? tall with a plant spread the 29-35?. ?Little Joe-Pye Weed? is more compact and shorter than other perennials in its family. With beautiful wine red stems that develop large green leaves, it is a definite attractor to butterflies and bees and it is deer resistant. Eupatorium ?Little Joe-Pye Weed? should be planted in full sun, but can tolerate some afternoon shade. Make sure it has a moist, well-drained area for optimal success. ?Little Joe Pye Weed? looks wonderful with Rudbeckia ?Black Eyed Susan?, Aster ?Woods Purple?, with ornamental grasses or in a perennial border. Peony - Sarah Bernhardt
The Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt', 'Paeonia', a fall planted bulb, is one of the most popular Double Peonies. This gorgeous variety produces large, soft pink flowers, of perfect form with a delightful fragrance. They produce superb, long lasting cut flowers. During late spring-early summer, they fill the garden with fragrance. They will bloom 3 to 4 weeks in late spring. The Peony tolerates some drought but thrives in moist, fertile, well-draining soil. If your soil is extremely acid, add some lime at planting time. Plant the roots with the eyes (buds) pointing up and place them 1" below the soil level. Peonies usually take a few years to establish and bloom heavily. Staking is recommended. Peonies attract butterflies and are great cut flowers and borders. Persian Fritillaria
The Persian Fritillaria, 'Fritillaria persica', is a fall planted bulb. The impressive Crown Imperial has a bundle of bell-like flowers all around the stem and a whimsical crown of green leaves. The pendulous flowers make a bold statement in the garden. It is by far the most well-known species and also one of the earliest plants to be cultivated. Clusius introduced this majestic plant to the Netherlands as early as the 16th century. The plant is found in such locations as Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan. The odor scares away mice, moles and other rodents. Plant immediately after acquiring the bulbs. Fritillaria prefers to be kept in the ground. After flowering and complete drying of the leaves, the stems should be cut off just above the ground. Mark the location of the bulbs to avoid any damage when digging or raking. Pink Buttercups
The Pink Buttercups, 'Oxalis adenophylla', a fall planted bulb, forms thick carpets of bright, deep pink flowers. The flowers are not the only attractive part of the plant. The finely incised greenish-gray leaves only add to Oxalis adenophylla's beauty. Oxalis adenophylla originates from Chili and Argentina where it grows high up in the mountains. This plant is also known as Chilean Wood Sorrel, Silver Shamrock, Pink Carpet Oxalis, Pink Sauerklee, and Sandoxalis. The flowers are most intense in mid summer, but they can begin blooming much earlier. Pink Buttercups are excellent in rock gardens, containers, or as a houseplant. Because of their short stature, they are also used as drought resistant ground cover. They prefer well drained soils.
