Royal Fern
The Royal Fern, Osmunda regalis, is a tall, deciduous fern which usually occurs on moist bluffs and ledges and along streams (sometimes growing in the water). Royal Ferns typically grows in clumps to 2-3' tall, but with constant moisture can revery 6' in height. The broad fronds have large, well-separated pinnae (leaflets) which give this fern an almost pea-family appearance. Fronds typically turn yellow to brown in autumn. The Royal Fern is also known as the Flowering Fern and is deciduous. Spores are located in brown, tassel-like, fertile clusters at the tips of the fronds, thus giving rise to the additional common name of flowering fern for this plant. The Royal Fern is an excellent selection for wet areas along ponds, streams, water gardens or in bogs. Russian Olive
The Russian Olive tree, Elaeagnus Angustifolia, is an excellent windbreak and wildlife tree. It is extremely tolerant of environmental factors. The best windbreak tree for high wind areas. Pictured is the Russian Olive in a tree form. Russian Olive trees can be made into a hedge by planting 10? apart in the row. The Russian Olive has low water requirements and displays a high tolerance for salt and alkali. Its stems, buds, and leaves have a dense covering of silvery to rusty scales. Leaves are egg or lance-shaped. At three years of age, plants begin to flower and fruit. Highly aromatic, creamy yellow flowers appear in June and July and are later replaced by clusters of abundant silvery fruits. Wildlife loves the fruit. Prized for its silvery gray foliage. Southern Red Oak
The Southern Red Oak tree, Quercus falcata, is characterized by its rough bark. The Southern red oak is also referred to as Spanish oak. Southern Red Oak trees are a medium-sized tree with a short trunk and large branches supporting a rounded crown. The bark is dark gray in color, furrowed, and is marked by rough ridges and plates. It is a tree of the Old South, ranging from Maryland to Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. The acorns are usually produced singly, and biennially. They are 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, roughly spherical and orange-brown. Songbirds, turkey, a variety of small mammals and deer eat the nuts. The Southern Oak tree is deciduous and is a good shade tree adapted to drier sites. Spice Bush
The Spicebush, Lindera bezoin, is a native deciduous shrub with a broad, rounded habit which typically grows 6-12' high. Clusters of tiny, aromatic, greenish-yellow flowers bloom along the branches in early spring before the foliage emerges. Flowers of female plants give way to bright red drupes (to 1/2" long) which mature in fall and are attractive to birds. Female plants need a male pollinator in order to set fruit, however. Drupes are very attractive, but are largely hidden by the foliage until the leaves drop. Thick, oblong, light green leaves (to 5" long) turn an attractive yellow in autumn. Leaves are aromatic when crushed. The larva (caterpillar) of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly feeds on the leaves of this shrub. Lindera is named for the Swedish botanist, Johann Lindler. It is used for shrub borders, shade or woodland gardens, moist areas along streams or ponds, native plant gardens or naturalized plantings. They are easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Fall color is best in sunny areas. Spiraea - Van Houtteis
The Spiraea Van Houttei's, Spiraea vanhouttei, has a foliage color of a dull bluish green. Flowers are white in April-May, borne in many flowered 1-2" diameter umbels. Outstanding deciduous shrub that is very showy in flower. Van Houtte Spirea is a durable and familiar shrub. Best growth occurs in a sunny location and any garden soil. Zumi Crabapple
The Zumi Crabapple tree, Malus x Zumi 'Calocarpa', is valued for its profuse, spring bloom of fragrant, white flowers and for its glossy, small, bright red crabapples which mature in the fall and often persist into December. A dense, rounded-to-spreading, deciduous tree which grows 12-20' high. The small fruits are edible, but not usually used in cooking. Fruits are long-lasting and attractive to birds. This deciduous tree has rich, dark green foliage. This crabapple is the standard for which other white flowering trees are compared. The flower buds are pink, foliage is green, disease resistance is excellent. In the fall, a long lasting display of small red fruit is offered. This is a semi-dwarf crabapple which is effective when planted as background for other early flowering plants, near fences, in groups as a screen or hedge, or as a specimen planting in the lawn or near the patio. Lamium - Beacon Silver
The Lamium ?Beacon Silver?, Lamium maculatum, has beautiful oval, gray-green to silvery-white leaves with greenish margins. The short spiked clear, pale pink flowers make it a wonderful ground cover. With a plant height of 6? and a spread of 12-24?, Lamium ?Beacon Silver? blooms from May to July. ?Beacon Silver? will grow best in full sun, but will tolerate some afternoon shade in a moist area. Plant in a well-drained soil and do not allow it to dry out. Smokebush - Royal Purple
Royal Purple Smokebush, cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple', exhibits beautiful, velvety, dark purple foliage throughout the growing season, with panicles of smoky-purple to beige flowers blooming in mid-summer. This gives the effect of a cloud of smoke. This xeriscape plant forms an upright, low branched, spreading shrub. It is a tough and tolerant shrub, requiring well-drained soil; and Royal Purple Smokebush thrives in part to full sun; the leaves are greener in shade, burgundy in full sun. It tolerates considerable drought once it is established. With minimal pruning it will naturally form a large shrub or small tree over time. If pruned to 6 to 8 inches tall in winter, it will produce long stems with striking, oversized foliage. Spirea - Billiard
Billiard Spirea, spiraea x billiardi, has an unusual flower form, with stamens twice as long as the petals. The rose colored blossoms occur in narrow, dense plumes from June to August. It has a tendency to sucker that would make it useful for embankments. It grows 6 feet tall and 4 feet in width. It is among the easiest flowering shrubs to grow since it is tolerant of many soils, except extremely wet. The plant also likes mulch and summer watering and prefers full sun to partial shade. Spirea - Bridalwreath
Bridalwreath Spirea, spiraea prunifolia, is a long-time favorite with its double, pure white flowers that bloom abundantly on arching branches in early spring. The clean, deep blue-green summer foliage develops an attractive yellow-orange to purple fall color. It is rounded with ascending graceful arching branches that are leggy, and somewhat irregular.
