Viburnum - Blackhaw

Blackhaw Viburnum, viburnum prunifolium, is an attractive, slow-growing, rounded shrub or small tree with glossy dark green foliage that turns to a shiny red in fall. It displays clusters of white flowers in May, followed by small, pink, changing to black, edible berries. It requires full sun to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun. It is adaptable to poor soils, compacted soils, soils of various pH, permanently moist soils, dry soils, moderate heat, drought, and pollution. Blackhaw is multitrunked, has a densely twiggy upright growth habit in youth, but quickly becomes rounded and sprawling with age, growing 12-15 feet in height and 8-12 feet wide. It can be used as an informal hedge, a deciduous screen, border, large foundation, woodland edge, embankment, or a naturalizing shrub for group or mass plantings. Viburnum - Nannyberry

Nannyberry Viburnum, viburnum lentago, is a hardy, upright growing shrub with glossy green foliage that turns red-purple in fall. The creamy white flat-topped flower clusters mature into small blue-black fruit, which provide winter food for birds. Due to its mild suckering, it becomes more open at maturity, with arching branches. Nannyberry is a large tree-like "leggy" native shrub that can be pruned into a small tree form. This shrub is good for farmstead windbreaks or a screen plant with year-round interest. It prefers rich loam to clay loam soil with ample moisture. This shrub does well in either full sun or shade and is one of the more tolerant woody plants in shady sites. It grows 20 feet tall and 6-10 or more feet wide. Pruning is required to remove suckers if a tree form is desired.
